When the Western Canada Junior Hockey League was formed in 1948-49, the northern teams of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League were not included. These teams continued playing as the North Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. In the 1948-49 season two Senior B teams played along with the junior teams, but this arrangement only lasted one season.The league became known as the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League for the 1951-52 season.
The league's fortunes were significantly strengthened when the Western Canada Junior Hockey League folded in 1956, paving the way for the re-entry of the Regina and Saskatoon teams.
History repeated itself following the 1965-66 season as several SJHL teams left the league to join the newly formed Canadian Major Junior Hockey League. With such an exodus of teams, the league disbanded. In 1968-69, a newly-formed SJHL reappeared when several Saskatchewan-based teams left the major junior league.

The Flin Flon Bombers (Manitoba) were a member of the league for its entire history; the Brandon Wheat Kings played in the league from 1964-1966.
